美國消費者新聞與商業頻道16日刊文說，一名美國企業高管透露說，白宮向他證實，中國沒有打來電話。這名高管表示，顯然美國政府大大高估了關稅對中國施加的影響力。
據報道，這名美國企業高管曾就中方對美關稅政策的回應即時緊盯白宮。
“我們給白宮方面打電話，問他們電話打得怎麼樣”，這名高管這樣描述其與白宮溝通關稅問題的進展。其中“電話打得怎麼樣”，意指“中方是否有給美國打電話，就美關稅政策展開商議”。
“白宮說，中國人沒有來電。”這是白宮告知這名美企業高管的最新中美溝通情況。由此，這名高管發出了本文開頭的感慨，即——特朗普政府大大高估了關稅給他們帶來的對華影響力。
"We called the White House. 'How did the call go?'" a senior US business executive who wished to remain unnamed told me last week. 美國消費者新聞與商業頻道（CNBC）4月16日就此刊發一篇評論文章，文章標題中直接說明：美國希望中國來電。但中方不會，起碼現在不會（The US wants China to call. Why it won’t – for now）。
商務部4月10日就已召開發佈會，明確回應了有關“中方是否就關稅問題與美展開談判”的問題。
商務部發言人表示，中方的立場是明確的、一貫的。談，大門敞開，但對話必須在相互尊重的基礎上以平等方式進行；打，中方也將奉陪到底。施壓、威脅和訛詐不是同中方打交道的正確方式。希望美方與中方相向而行，本著相互尊重、和平共處、合作共贏的原則，透過對話協商妥善解決分歧。

按照英文直譯，這句話可以簡單翻譯成“你對我好，我也對你好。”布魯斯·劉解釋說：“但如果你想欺負我，我們不會接受。我們知道這可能會給我們的經濟或日常生活帶來影響，但我們已經為此做好了準備。”

That's [being] Chinese," Bruce Liu, CEO of asset manager Esoterica Capital, said on Monday."But if you want to bully me, we're not going to take that. We know this might cause hardship in our economy or our daily life, but we are ready for that," he said.
和美國消費者新聞與商業頻道持有相同觀點的，還有英國的《金融時報》與美國的彭博社。這兩家媒體都認為，中國在應對美國關稅方面，還有很多張“王牌”沒有使用。相較特朗普政府盲目在關稅上玩數字遊戲，耗盡政策空間，中國顯然有比美方預想的更有力的反制手段與底氣。
英國《金融時報》15日就分析指出，中國掌握有多張“王牌”，包括多樣化的出口市場、對關鍵戰略礦產的掌控以及國家體制上的巨大優勢等，這些籌碼不但能讓中方經受住特朗普的關稅考驗，而且還能在談判中彰顯自身實力。
彭博社14日的文章進一步說明，儘管貿易戰沒有贏家，但在這場由特朗普發起的貿易戰中，中國掌握的籌碼比美方預想得更為有力，這一事實正變得愈發清晰。在中美貿易關係的現實下，美國深度依賴中國商品，美國頒佈關稅措施限制進口中方商品，反而變為一種自我戕害。
