牛津選出這個“年度熱詞”：竟是因為手機刷太多？

最近，牛津大學出版社（Oxford University Press）釋出了2024年度的“年度詞彙”——“brain rot”，直譯就是大腦腐爛，聽上去很嚇人。

其實，brain rot指的是現在很普遍的一個現象，可能我們每個人都或多或少經歷過。究竟是什麼意思呢？我們來看一下外媒的報道：

There’s a name for that feeling you get after spending too long scrolling aimlessly, and Oxford University Press (OUP) has chosen it as its word for the year for 2024.

如果你在無目的地刷屏之後感到一種奇怪的感覺，那麼現在有個詞可以描述這種情緒，牛津大學出版社（OUP）將其選為2024年的年度詞彙。

這裡的關鍵詞是scrolling aimlessly，即漫無目的地刷手機。

表示move text or graphics on a computer screen in order to view different parts of it，即滑動（計算機螢幕上），滾動。

“刷”手機英語怎麼說？這裡的刷，不是真的拿刷子去刷，所以不是brush，而是scroll。

我們接著看brain rot的定義：

In a statement released Monday, OUP, which publishes the Oxford English Dictionary, defined “brain rot” as “the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging.”

出版《牛津英語詞典》的牛津大學出版社在週一釋出的一份宣告中將“腦腐爛”定義為“一個人的精神或智力狀態的所謂惡化，尤其是由於過度消費被認為是瑣碎或沒有挑戰性的材料（現在特別是線上內容）而導致的。”

rot作動詞時表示decay or decompose, usually due to the action of bacteria or fungi，腐爛或分解，通常由於細菌或真菌的作用，在上文中rot作名詞，也是腐爛的意思。

在這裡，“腐爛”並非指物體的腐敗，而是用來形容精神或智力的“退化”，而rot的英英解釋中出現的decay 和decompose這兩個詞常用來表示物理的腐敗。

trivial表示of little value or importance，即微不足道的，瑣碎的。這個詞在這裡形容的是“無聊、低價值”的線上內容，這樣的內容看多了，也是是“腦袋腐爛”的主要原因之一。

brain rot這個詞我們可能第一次聽說，但這個說法已經存在很久了。讓我們接著看看《瓦爾登》的作者梭羅一百年前對brain rot的看法：

While England endeavours to cure the potato rot,” wrote Thoreau, “will not any endeavour to cure the brain-rot – which prevails so much more widely and fatally?

梭羅寫道：“當英國努力治癒馬鈴薯腐爛病時，難道就沒有人努力治癒流行更廣、更致命的腦部腐爛病嗎？”

prevail表示be more powerful or more widespread than something else，即比其他事物更強大或更廣泛，流行，盛行。

The term has gained traction over the past year, however, especially as worries grow about the impact of over-consuming low-quality content online.

然而，這個詞在過去一年裡越來越受到關注，尤其是隨著人們越來越擔心過度消費低質量的網路內容所帶來的影響。

traction表示the action of pulling something over a surface or the grip of a tire on a surface，即抓地力，吸引力。

在和gain搭配時，gain traction表示抓地力增強了，引申的含義就是關注度和影響力增加了，可以用來描述某種趨勢的興起。
