The Ohio Supreme Court Candidate Forum was held on November 1 2024 on zoom.
Justice Donnelly, Justice Stewart and Judge Forbes joined the Forum, had very productive conversation with the attendees on judicial philosophy, election, fairness, transparency, check and balance, and etc. On the other hand, Judge Hawkins informed us he could not make it due to a family emergency right before the start of the Forum, Justice Deters turned down the invitation as he had a conflict, while Judge Shanahan never replied to our email.
Here are the questions answered by Justice Donnelly:
1. In recent years, we witnessed the worsening of the U.S.-China relation. There is increased negative scrutiny of the Asian American community. This led to incidents where Chinese American, such as Sherry Chen, a hydrologist from southern Ohio, were wrongfully charged with espionage. For many Asian Americans, these events evoke painful memories of Japanese internment during World War II, leaving the community feeling uneasy and wary. As a candidate for the Ohio Supreme Court, what steps would you take to build trust and reassure the Asian American community of the judiciary’s commitment to impartiality, fairness, and justice?
2. It seems that these days American society is increasingly divided, and we are not able to agree on anything. Issues such as reproductive rights, redistricting, LGBTQ rights, gun safety, and the separation of church and state, have become highly contentious and politicized. As a Ohio Supreme Court judge, how do you approach lawsuits related to these issues, and what principles guide you in making fair and impartial decisions on such matters?"

1. What is your views on Judicial Elections? Do you believe that Ohio Supreme Court seats should be elected in partisan elections? How might the current structure affect judicial independence, and would you support reforms?
2. On Public Transparency: "In light of public trust concerns, how would you advocate for transparency in the Court’s procedures and decisions to enhance public understanding and confidence?"
Here are the questions answered by Judge Forbes:
1. What is your view on the role of the Ohio Supreme Court as a check on the legislative and executive branches? How would you balance judicial review with respecting the decisions of Ohio’s elected branches?
2. Republicans have held the majority of the Ohio Supreme Court for nearly 40 years. Right now the ratio is 4:3. Anything you’ll do differently if the court turns democratic?
