From ancient Chinese archives to becoming modern libraries, there has been a significant transition in the focus of libraries from being "collection-focused" to "balancing collection and utilization". With the rise of AI and large language models, libraries are facing both challenges and opportunities. "AI can assist in preliminary processing of literature and knowledge services, but the humanistic value of libraries remains irreplaceable," said Huo Ruijuan, deputy director and research librarian at the National Library of China.
Despite the convenience of e-books, Huo emphasized the irreplaceable charm of physical books. "The rustle of pages, the texture of the paper, the scent of ink, and even the intricate craftsmanship in special bindings or modern pop-up books create a multi-sensory experience that digital resources cannot replicate," she said.
The National Library of China is innovating with "library plus" models: 24/7 self-service stations, cultural tourism-integrated spaces, and international collaborations. "We recently signed an agreement with the National Library Board of Singapore for joint exhibitions, and are deepening partnerships with libraries in Russia, Japan, and the UK," Huo said.
"I prefer physical books for deeper focus," said Huo. Her advice to readers? "Let spiritual needs guide your reading choices, but never underestimate immersive depth. Book clubs and social practices broaden perspectives — they sharpen core competencies."
In the AI era, libraries are not just knowledge repositories but sanctuaries for the soul. As Huo concluded: "Reading is ultimately about internalizing wisdom through the eyes and the heart."
