Following the joint exhibition, symposium, and summer program on "Design with Nature" co-hosted by Southeast University and the University of Pennsylvania in May–June 2024, the two institutions will reconvene this May–June for "Innovative Rural-scape"—an international summer school and academic symposium. This year's program expands its partnership to include Anhui Jianzhu University and Hefei University of Technology.
Over 60 faculty members and students from Chinese and American universities will immerse themselves in rural China, studying sites ranging from Huizhou's traditional villages (archetypal models of vernacular architecture and rural landscapes) to Zhejiang's contemporary villages, where the ethos of "livable, workable, and harmonious rural revitalization" is being realized. Through fieldwork, archival research, and innovative design, participants will decode the cultural foundations of rural China and witness firsthand the transformative evolution of rural landscapes under national revitalization strategies.

The two-week international joint summer school will build a bridge of communication, understanding and trust for young people from China and the United States, and also make academic contributions to the research on the evolution of multi-domain landscapes in history and reality.

Innovative Rural-scape
For generations, humans have made their homes upon the land, nestled against mountains, settled by waters, shaping hospitable environments to thrive and harmonizing with natural order to endure. The marks of this coexistence linger in the places we inhabit. Architecture, sites, pathways, farmlands, waterways, and woodlands—all serve as mediators between people and nature, earth and sky. Together, they form a shared rural landscape that transcends historical shifts, ideological divides, and cultural differences. These landscapes embody the survival strategies and construction wisdom of human adaptation, distilling both the science of habitation and the aesthetics of place-making, where ecological foundations intertwine with human narratives.
In contemporary China and across the world, rural environments and cultural traditions face unprecedented challenges, yet they also harbor fertile ground for innovation. Emerging urban-rural dynamics, new industries, and cutting-edge technologies are reshaping the present and future evolution of rural landscapes.
Guiding Questions for Our Era:
How should we frame the complex relationship between urban and rural realms?
How might we rediscover the traditional intelligence and latent innovation within rural landscapes?
What design methodologies can envision their future trajectories?
These questions demand creative research and design responses.
The 2025 SEU-Penn Summer Program will engage these themes through fieldwork in Shanghai, Nanjing, Huizhou, and Hangzhou, examining classic and contemporary case studies across urban environments, historic landmarks, traditional villages, and modern rural construction. Through academic inquiry and design experimentation, we will explore the innovative potential of rural landscapes.

Integrating Field Studies and Academic Discourse: Three Core Research Themes
1) History: Deciphering Traditional Settlement Mechanisms and Landscape Wisdom
The rural landscape represents an evolved built environment system embodying centuries of localized production, living patterns, and construction intelligence. Its spatial organization—from settlement layouts and water systems to agricultural planning—reflects a profound interweaving of feng shui principles, ancestral rites, agrarian civilization, and vernacular culture.
These traditions now serve dual roles: as cultural heritage requiring preservation, and as living specimens of human adaptation demanding reinterpretation. Through comparative studies of villages in Huizhou, Hangzhou, and Nanjing, we will employ contemporary research frameworks to excavate and reactivate this ancestral wisdom within modern contexts.
2) Present: Diagnosing Contemporary Challenges, Proposing Solutions
China's rapid urbanization over three decades triggered massive rural-to-urban migration, creating parallel trajectories of metropolitan expansion and rural decline. Recent national strategies like Rural Revitalization and New Urbanization have begun reversing these flows, creating unprecedented opportunities for rural landscape regeneration.
Critical questions emerge:
· What systemic obstacles hinder current rural landscape development?
· How can disciplinary expertise diagnose these issues?
· What professional interventions might yield sustainable solutions?
This theme demands collaborative problem-solving grounded in empirical research.
3) Future: Synthesizing Trends for Innovative Prospects
The concept of rural landscapes transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries, demanding hybrid approaches for future innovation. Our program examines 21st-century rural construction prototypes across the Yangtze Delta region—microcosms of China's contemporary rural experimentation.
Through these case studies, participants will:
· Synthesize emerging industries and technologies with site-specific conditions
· Develop future-oriented design frameworks
· Conduct conceptual design experiments
The outcome seeks to establish innovative paradigms for next-generation rural landscapes.
