——Robert Barwick

Barwick

After failing to win back Australian Chinese votes,
desperate Liberals resort to Sinophobic McCarthyite threats
Australian Citizens Party (ACP) Senate candidate for
Victoria Robert Barwick today blasted Liberal Senator James Paterson and The
Age
newspaper for their “vicious McCarthyism” in threatening a leader of
the Australian Chinese community.
“The Age is the degenerated newspaper that ran the
ludicrous ‘Red Alert’ headline in March 2023 hyping up a Chinese invasion of
Australia”, Barwick said.
“Now they are assisting the Liberals to threaten an
Australian Chinese community leader because Chinese voters have not returned to
the party run by thugs who talk up war against China.”
The Age on 28 April reported that two Australian
Chinese election volunteers in Kooyong openly told a social media interviewer
that community leader Mr Ji Jianmin, the president of the Australian Hubei
Association, told them to support independent Monique Ryan.
In typical McCarthyite style, named for 1950s US Senator Joe
McCarthy who falsely accused opponents of links to communism, The Ageclaimed Mr Ji’s association has been “accused of working with the United Front
Work Department, a central party agency that advances CCP interests at home and
abroad”.
The Age cited as evidence a 2018 parliamentary
submission by Clive Hamilton and Alex Joske, the authors of the infamous 2018
book Silent Invasion, which supercharged the wave of anti-China paranoia
that swept Australia during the first term of Donald Trump by claiming, without
providing any evidence, that 20 per cent of Australian Chinese are loyal to
Beijing, not Australia.
Topping off their Sinophobic report, The Age quoted
Liberal Senator James Paterson, who threatened Mr Ji under the McCarthyite
foreign interference law he personally helped ram through Parliament in 2018,
demanding an ASIO and AFP investigation.
Late on 28 April Mr Ji released a statement explaining he
has been a resident of Australia for 29 years, became a naturalised Australian
citizen on 26 January 2022, and has not even visited China in seven years.
His statement asked The Age to provide the “evidence
and facts” connecting him to United Front.
Robert Barwick said: “I have met Mr Ji, and many other
Australian Chinese community leaders, who were guests at the ACP’s forum in Box
Hill on 28 April.
“Australian Chinese, like other immigrant communities, are
enthusiastic citizens who want to make a contribution to their new country.
“That contribution often includes using their business
connections to their mother countries to help boost economic ties, which is
entirely natural.
“Except this activity is smeared when it comes to China,
thanks to the lies of China-haters who beat the drums of war as, ironically,
agents of US influence over Australian politics.
“For example, Clive Hamilton’s co-author Alex Joske was
mentored by an ‘ex’ CIA officer, and they wrote their racist ‘yellow peril’ diatribeSilent Invasion in collaboration with the US-funded Australian Strategic
Policy Institute (ASPI).
“In turn, the US-funded ASPI drove the propaganda campaign
that Senator Paterson, a regular in Washington, fronted in Parliament to push
through the 2018 foreign interference laws.
“These laws are so broad that suddenly many natural
interactions can be labelled foreign interference with very little evidence.
Australian Chinese businessman Sonny Duong is serving a year in jail for
donating $37,500 to a children’s hospital!
“Yet the Chinese diaspora’s activities in Australia are
nothing compared with the extent of direct US, UK and Israeli government
interference in Australian politics, which is always ignored.”
Barwick noted both major parties recruit ethnic community
support by engaging with community leaders, who often direct their community
members on who to support and how to vote.
“If the Liberals don’t like Australian Chinese voting
against them, they should stop beating the drums of war”, he said.
