The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) has been fundamentally changing and shaping how we understand, prevent and treat mental illness and other conditions that affect the brain. The legacy, ethos and drive of the IoPPN has ensured its position at the forefront of mental health care, redefining mental illness, its treatment and its place in society.

The IoPPN is divided into 14 academic departments across three major academic Schools: Academic Psychiatry, Mental Health & Psychological Sciences, and Neuroscience.

The Department of Psychological Medicine, part of the School of Academic Psychiatry, focuses on the interface between psychiatry and medicine, psychiatry and occupation, psychiatry and the military, and psychiatry in different settings.

Within the Department of Psychological Medicine, the Centre for Affective Disorders (CfAD) is a vibrant centre of expertise dedicated to research into affective disorders, primarily depression and bipolar illnesses. CfAD is a centre of excellence for both understanding the science related to these illnesses, and application of this knowledge to help develop new treatments of all types including psychological and pharmacological. We are based in Denmark Hill, South London.

The Centre brings together world-leading clinician scientists, based at King's College London, including Professors Anthony Cleare, Roland Zahn, Carmine Pariante, and Allan Young.

Affective disorders overlap with many other areas of psychiatry and medicine, so the Centre works with colleagues throughout the King’s College London, and more widely.

About the role

We are delighted to share this opportunity for a motivated researcher to work within CfAD. This role will work closely with Dr Rebecca Strawbridge undertaking an exciting new clinical trial, which aims to improve the experience of care for people with bipolar disorders taking lithium treatment. There will also be opportunities for ongoing involvement in other collaborative research studies in the Centre.

The successful candidate will demonstrate experience of research study administration and management following GCP guidelines, including recruitment and data collection with research volunteers who have lived experience of mental health conditions.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone who wishes to have a career in mental health research, particularly those with an interest in clinical trials, depression and bipolar disorders.

This is a full-time post, which is offered under a fixed term contract for 12 months from 1st May 2025.

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

1）First degree in a relevant subject

2）Evidence of continued professional / educational development.

3）Experience of research interviewing, including psychological measures and clinical assessments in patient groups.

4）Experience recruiting volunteers for research studies.

5）Experience of research data and/or project management

6）Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).

7）High level of organisational skills, problem solving and planning.

8）Knowledge of ethics and research governance procedures.

Desirable criteria

1）Training in Good Clinical Practice (GCP).

2）Experience working with people experiencing affective disorders.

3）Experience working on clinical trials.

4）Experience of analysing data.

5）Contribution to peer-reviewed publications.
