國家，民族，不公
用英語怎麼說？
前不久，外長王毅會見了歐盟外交與安全政策高階代表博雷利。在會見後的記者會上，王毅外長就巴勒斯坦問題，比較全面地闡述了中方的立場。表述的用詞並不複雜，但有些話在翻譯成英語時，需要格外注意。
比如，“建國”中的“國”字，在英語中究竟該用哪個詞？
這一問題的根源在於巴勒斯坦獨立建國的夙願遲遲未能實現，在於巴勒斯坦人民遭受的歷史不公一直未能得到糾正。
The root cause of this question lies in the long delay in realizing the dream of an independent State of Palestine and the failure to redress the historical injustice suffered by the Palestinian people.
上面的“實現”和“糾正”在中文裡，都是動詞，但在用英語表達時，“遲遲未能實現”譯為long delay，“未能得到糾正”譯為failure to redress，都把名詞變成了動詞。
在翻譯時，有時可以打破原文的句型和詞性，目的是讓譯文更加簡潔和地道。
“獨立建國”在上面譯為an independent State of Palestine，也是把動詞變成名詞，“國”對應的單詞是state。
柯林斯詞典對state的解釋是You can refer to countries as states, particularly when you are discussing politics. (政治上所指的) 國家。
這裡指的正是巴勒斯坦的政治地位，所以在這裡用了state，而不是別的表示國家的詞。中國支援的兩國方案two-state solution也是用的state。
redress表示remedy or set right (an undesirable or unfair situation)，即糾正不好的局面。
injustice表示a lack of fairness in a situation，即不公正。
表示政治上所指的國家，除了state，還可以用另外一個很像的詞。
以色列有建國的權利，巴勒斯坦同樣有建國的權利。
Israel has the right to statehood, so does Palestine.
這裡在state後面加了字尾hood。state是一個可數名詞，表示國家，加了字尾之後，statehood表示作為國家的地位或狀態，是一個不可數名詞。
國家用state表示，那民族呢？
猶太民族已不在世界上顛沛流離，巴勒斯坦民族何時才能重返家園？
The Jewish nation is no longer homeless in the world, but when will the Palestinian nation return to its home?
上面對應“民族”的詞是nation。這個詞有好幾個意思。可以表示國家，這時nation的解釋是A nation is an individual country considered together with its social and political structures。
這是從社會和政治結構的角度所指的國家，而前面用的state是從政治上所指的國家。雖然翻譯成中文都是國家，但意思的側重點還是有所不同。
nation也可以表示民族，這時nation的解釋是The nation is sometimes used to refer to all the people who live in a particular country, or all the people who belong to a particular ethnic group. 可以指全體國民，或者是某個民族。
在提到國家時，還會經常用到country一詞。country的解釋是A country is one of the political units which the world is divided into, covering a particular area of land. 從這個解釋可以看出，country泛指國家，和state、nation是有所不同的。
country的另一個解釋是The people who live in a particular country can be referred to as the country. 也就是國民的意思，不能像nation一樣，表示某個名族。
state，nation，country，3個很簡單，也是我們很熟悉的詞。看上去很像，但其實是有微妙的區別的！
