英語裡有些表達，一聽就覺得有畫面感，能把意思傳到心坎裡。最近讀外刊時看到兩個很好用的表達，和大家分享：

《巴倫週刊》關於美國和各國貿易談判的報道：
Stocks fall a second day. Patience wears thin on trade talks.
股市連續第二天下跌，市場對貿易談判的耐心日漸消磨。
wear thin 的意思是：逐漸消磨殆盡、快要耗盡、越來越少（如耐心、信任、藉口等）。
wear：原義是“磨損、耗損”，可及物（wear clothes）也可不及物（My shoes are wearing out）。
thin：在這裡不是“瘦”的意思，而是“稀薄、減少”的狀態。
Wear thin是一個極具畫面感的表達，我們可以將將“耐心”或“信任”等抽象概念想象成一層紙，經過摩擦後變得越來越“薄”——這就是wear thin。
本文中，Patience wears thin也可以說：run out of patience, lose patience, grow tired of, grow weary of，不過wear thin更具形象性，就像把一張紙慢慢磨薄、磨破。
它的常見搭配有：

這個短語可以用在社會議題中，描述民眾對對政策、物價、衝突失去耐心；也可以用在媒體語境中，表達社會情緒的變化；在雅思/考研等英語作文中，也可以用它來描述情緒的遞進轉折（first…, but as time passed, patience wore thin），例如，在“遠端辦公”話題中，我們可以這樣描述公眾對遠端辦公態度的變化：
First, the company offered remote work options to its employees, but as time passed, patience wore thin as employees struggled with isolation and reduced productivity.起初，公司為員工提供了遠端辦公的選擇，但隨著時間的推移，員工們因孤立和生產力下降而逐漸失去耐心。

Global shipping is grinding to a standstill. It’s a matter of time until Americans feel it.
全球航運幾近停滯，美國民眾感受到影響只是時間問題。
grind指“磨碎”，也可表示緩慢沉重地移動（grind forward），standstill表示“靜止狀態、停滯”，尤用於交通、經濟、談判等場景。
grind to a standstill表示“緩慢地徹底停滯”，這是一個極具畫面感的表達，比單純的“stop”更有層次和衝擊力。
《新概念英語第三冊》第39課《Nothing to worry about》 中就有類似的用法：
Bruce charged at it, but in the middle, the car came to a grinding halt.
布魯斯猛衝了過去，但在中間，車嘎然停住。
grind to a standstill/halt = come to a standstill/halt，只不過這裡把grinding用作形容詞，表示一種刺耳的聲音。
這個短語可以用在交通場景中，例如：
After a minor accident on the highway, traffic quickly ground to a standstill during rush hour.在高峰時段，高速公路上因一起輕微事故，交通很快陷入癱瘓。
也可以用來表示系統或網站癱瘓：
The company’s website ground to a standstill after a sudden surge in traffic during the online sale.公司網站在網上促銷期間因流量激增而陷入癱瘓。
可以表示流程或進度陷入停滯：
When the project manager suddenly resigned, the whole team’s progress ground to a standstill.專案經理突然辭職後，整個團隊的進度陷入停滯。
還可以用於描述情緒：
Her motivation ground to a standstill after repeated failures in job interviews.多次求職失敗後，她的動力徹底停滯了。
