Transfer Trajectory
Transferred from a public school to Daystar in second grade
They originally studied at a pretty good public school in Beijing’s Xicheng district. But the school's educational approach and our expectations were not matched. Every Sunday, the children would get anxious and upset because they had to go back to school on Monday.
In less than two months after transferring to Daystar, we saw positive changes: the children love going to school every day; and they will tell us in detail about the interesting things that happen at school. Before, when they were sick, they would say, "Great, I don't have to go to school!" Now, if they are unwell and cannot go to school, they are disappointed.
When they transferred from the public school to Daystar, I was concerned about their English proficiency. Now those worries have been completely dispelled. Their teacher, James, communicates with me face-to-face about their situation, and he will also adjust the children's assignments based on my feedback. The personalized support is excellent!
Also, Daystar's teachers are very good at igniting the students’ intrinsic motivation. In the past, I put in a lot of effort to stimulate their interest in learning – for example, writing – but with limited results. Now, they are seeking out opportunities to continue learning to read and write! I am very curious: what "magic" do the teachers have?
Never Underestimate
the "Sense of Belonging".

Joe Zhou, Joe Zhou's mother
Transfer Trajectory Enrolled at Daystar in first grade, transferred to a Canadian boarding school in ninth grade, returned to Daystar in tenth grade
Joe Zhou's mother: Joe has been studying at Daystar since first grade. Before ninth grade, some of his classmates had transferred abroad for high school. I felt this had an impact on him. At that time, I also hoped he would go to Canada for university. So in ninth grade, Joe transferred to a boarding school in Canada.
The Canadian school was a larger IB school, and he adapted quite well. But during the first vacation, he told us that this school "has nothing that interests me."
Joe Zhou: I was still in my Daystar friends WeChat group, and I could see my former classmates discussing what they were learning. Compared with what they were discussing, I felt the courses at the school in Canada were somewhat superficial; and the difficulty of the science courses was just at the Daystar’s sixth grade level. I also felt quite lonely being on my own in Canada.
At the time, I was also quite conflicted about whether to come back. But something a friend said to me helped me decide. He said, "You have to think about where makes you happier." Daystar's small and intimate campus gave me a strong sense of belonging, and coming back made me happier!…
Our teachers have also started discussing DP course selection with us. Since the school is small, the teachers have a better understanding of who we are, and based on our previous individual performance, they can advise us what might happen if we choose certain courses. The school in Canada has a larger student body, so the teachers could only give more general advice.
Joe Zhou's mother: After transferring back to Daystar, Joe can be more objective and rational in his assessment of his environment. He is much more satisfied, grounded, and happy day to day!
The More Inclined A Child Is Towards Science, The More They Need To Cultivate Their Appreciation And Abilities In Humanities To Develop As A "Whole Person".

Speaker Jerry Zhang's mother
Transfer Trajectory Enrolled at Daystar in first grade, transferred to another bilingual school in ninth grade , then returned to Daystar in tenth grade
My child leans more towards science. After entering middle school, we wanted him to focus more on further strengthening his science knowledge and learning English. We were also worried that he may not be well suited for the IB system in Daystar’s high school. Based on my understanding at the time, IB learning requires writing lengthy essays, which would be more like liberal arts and different from our perception of what is needed for science. So when my child was in ninth grade, we transferred to a bilingual school that is strong in physics, chemistry and mathematics.
At the new school, my son was satisfied with the science program, and he also unexpectedly discovered that his English, which was only average at Daystar, had become a comparative strength.
Later, I spoke with a Daystar graduate who explained to me that Daystar’s high school teachers are both passionate and diligent. This student chose math, biology, and chemistry as his DP subjects, and got full marks of seven in all three. This gave me more confidence in Daystar’s high school academics.
The experience at the new school also made me realize that the more inclined a child is towards science, the more they need to cultivate their appreciation and abilities in humanities to develop as a "whole person." A school’s culture is also very important for a child's growth; the type of classmates and families they encounter will directly affect their personality, interests, and values develop.
Given all these factors, we returned to Daystar in tenth grade because we believe that the educational environment here can best support our child's development!
I Feel That Letting Go Of Control And Trusting My Child Is The Best Gift I Can Give Him!

Transfer Trajectory
Enrolled at Daystar in first grade, transferred to another bilingual school in ninth grade, then returned to Daystar in tenth grade
My son’s experience is very similar to Jerry Zhang's; they transferred to the same school and then both came back.
The experience at the new school made us realize that Daystar had already cultivated strong academic skills and qualities for our children.
Soon after we went to the new school, the ICT(Information and Communication Technology) teacher contacted me to share feedback about one of my son's assignments. At the parent-teacher meeting, this teacher showed me the research booklet my son had done, and said, "For such a young student to produce a summary that is almost at the academic research report standard of an adult is truly remarkable. The format, logic, and presentation style are all excellent!"
Reflecting on the reasons for transferring at that time, it was because we didn't believe our child could overcome certain challenges and didn't trust he could adapt to the learning in higher grade levels. Ultimately, this helped us to realize that our child is stronger than we had imagined.
While previously, it was a parent-led decision to transfer out, this time, we let our child take the lead to decide to return. Our son was clear in his choice to return to Daystar. His reasons were simple: he believes in his own abilities and knows he can become a better version of himself at Daystar.
I feel that letting go of control and trusting my child is the best gift I can give him.
If Your Child Can Soar Higher, Don’t Shy Away From Challenges!

Speaker Lauren Lip's father
Transfer Trajectory Transferred from an international school to Daystar in fourth grade
Lauren came back to Beijing from being out of the country two years ago; at that time she started at an international school. In the first year, she adapted very well, but in the second year, her Chinese and math progress was not as expected. We felt the reason was that she was not being challenged enough and was no longer as excited about learning.
We visited Daystar, and immediately found that this is the school we were looking for. Daystar's personalized teaching is very appealing to us. In Lauren's first week at the school, we received messages from the teachers, telling us about her progress in certain subjects and areas that needed more attention; they even quickly developed a customized learning plan for her, which really surprised us!
Lauren's integration was very smooth, whether it was the teachers, classmates, or the school staff, they all took special care of her. During lunchtime, the cafeteria staff immediately recognized her as a new transfer student. They warmly welcomed her and encouraged her to eat more! I feel that it is the collective effort of everyone in the community that has created this caring community culture.
We saw the changes in Lauren. She studied harder, and really enjoyed learning at the appropriate level and with enough challenge. We only wish we had known about Daystar earlier!
Every transition in a child’s educational journey is an opportunity for the family to reexamine their educational philosophy. The stories of these five families illustrate that for a school to be truly good, it must not only impart knowledge, but also inspire students to pursue a sense of happiness and belonging. Daystar sincerely welcome and invite families who resonate with Daystar's philosophy to join us at our Open House:

In the TOC ASIA National Debate Championship, Daystar students won the high school division Championship in Public Forum debate, and also received the Outstanding Speaker Award.
According to recent official data from MAP testing, while Daystar students enter Pre-K and Grade 1 with lower average reading scores than their peers in the U.S., they catch up by Grade 2 and begin to outperform U.S. students by Grade 4.
