From the vibrant urban landscape of Brooklyn to the tumultuous backdrop of the Civil War, poet Walt Whitman skillfully captured the diverse and dynamic nature of American life in his concise and modern language. Whitman's profound appreciation for the human experience transcended geographical and societal boundaries and epitomized the deep-seated passion of a pacifist for his nation and people. Through tireless revisions and editing, his seminal work, Leaves of Grass, paved the way for the emergence of contemporary American poetry. His freedom and soulfulness in expression and personal sagas influenced generations of readers and writers.
Whitman's influential works have captivated a distinguished coterie of disciples and admirers throughout the ages. His writings have been a wellspring of inspiration for prominent artists, notably Van Gogh's painting "Starry Night" of the 19th century, Chris DeBlasio's musical composition "Walt Whitman in 1989" during the 20th century, and the American crime drama television series "Breaking Bad" in the 21st century.
These references and reinterpretations have revitalized Whitman's timeless writings and enduring narratives.
The Columbia Global Center Beijing cordially invites you to a night of poetry and music on August 11, part of the Center's 2024 Summer Scholar-in-Residence program. The event will feature special musical performances of Whitman's renowned works, as well as thought-provoking discussions on his legacy. Bass singer Mike He, talented pianist Jingyi Song BC '20, and translator Yuefeng Lu of the book Walt Whitman's America: A Cultural Biography will come together to pay tribute to the literary icon.
