這是兩年前的事。五月端陽，渡船頭祖父找人作了代替，便帶了黃狗同翠翠進城，到大河邊去看划船。河邊站滿了人，四隻硃色長船在潭中滑著，龍船水剛剛漲過，河中水皆豆綠色，天氣又那麼明朗，鼓聲蓬蓬響著，翠翠抿著嘴一句話不說，心中充滿了不可言說的快樂。河邊人太多了一點，各人皆盡張著眼睛望河中，不多久，黃狗還留在身邊，祖父卻擠得不見了。

It happened two years ago, during the Dragon Boat Festival in May. Grandfather, having found a replacement at the ferry, took Cuicui and the dog along into town to watch the boat races. The riverbank was teeming with people, and four vermilion long boats were gliding on the rising emerald waters after the heavy rain. The weather was bright, and the drums thundered. Cuicui, her lips pressed together in silent joy, was captivated. The crowd was dense, with everyone fixated on the river. Before long, Cuicui found only the dog around, and Grandfather was nowhere to be seen.
